Mental Health 101 Review

Mental health calls are a common occurrence for first responders. Even on non-mental health calls mental health conditions are a common co-morbid factor. To provide the best and most compassionate care first responders must understand these conditions. Mental health conditions are common in the general population. This course provides a review of signs and symptoms of different mental health conditions, how they’re treated, and how they can affect patient care.

– List common mental health conditions present in the general population
– Describe the primary symptoms of several common mental health conditions
– Explain how mental health conditions can affect co-morbid medical conditions
– List three or more mental health conditions that can be mistaken for medical conditions

Mental Health Mega Code

While we take care of everyone, who takes care of us? Sometimes we need to call a mega code on our own mental health. This course includes a review of the risk factors influencing first responder mental wellness; a review of the statistics related to first responder mental health; how to recognize someone who may be having a mental health crisis; and also how to talk to someone who needs help.

– Explain how first responder culture impacts mental wellness
– Summarize the statistics related to first responder mental health conditions
– List risk factors that increase the risk of suicide in first responders
– List indicators someone is having a mental health crisis and how to respond

Mental Health For Management

First responder agencies have often prepared for an employee injury or line of duty death. However, have you prepared for a mental health crisis or employee suicide? This course provides an overview of employee mental health, workplace culture, reducing employee stress, and how to be proactive regarding employee mental health.

– Summarize how first responder work affects employee mental health.
– List several policies first responder workplaces should have in place to address mental health.
– Summarize how management influences agency culture and mental health.
– List indicators someone is having a mental health crisis and how to respond.

Inclusivity in the Classroom

As first responders become increasingly diverse, it is important that our classrooms follow suite. Students who feel comfortable and included are more likely to succeed. Inclusive habits ingrained early in a students career are more likely to carry into their every day patient care and coworker interactions. This course helps guide instructors in how to ensure their content is widely inclusive. It also touches on harassment and bullying in the classroom.

– Define terms for several identities that may present in their student population.
– Describe multiple ways to promote inclusivity in the classroom.
– List at least three examples of bullying and provide examples of how to address them.
